Description

The Museum of Polish Aviation in Kraków is one of the most important aviation museums in Poland and one of the city’s standout cultural attractions. The museum presents the history of aviation through aircraft, engines, documents, uniforms, equipment and other aviation-related artefacts, while also carrying out exhibition, educational, research, publishing and conservation work. It is located at al. Jana Pawła II 39 in Kraków.

What makes the museum especially distinctive is its setting. It stands on the grounds of the former Rakowice-Czyżyny airfield, a historic site created before the First World War and later closely linked with Polish military aviation. The museum explains that the airfield was closed in 1963, after which the museum was established there, preserving not only aircraft and collections but also the memory of one of the key historic aviation sites in Kraków.

Today, the museum offers a broad and layered picture of aviation history rather than a single narrow theme. Its permanent exhibitions include sections such as “Wings and People of the 20th Century,” “Wings of the Great War,” “Wings of the Cold War,” “Engine Hall,” “Aviation Archaeology,” “MiG Alley,” and the outdoor display. The museum’s own exhibition pages describe it as a place where the rich history of Polish aviation is presented through unique exhibits and interactive displays, linking tradition with modern museum storytelling.

A major recent addition has strengthened that profile even further. In August 2025, the museum opened “Z wiatrem i pod wiatr – lotnictwo cywilne” (“With the Wind and Against It – Civil Aviation”), which it describes as the largest exhibition devoted to civil aviation in Poland and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. According to the museum, the exhibition covers more than 3,000 square metres and presents the history of Polish civil aviation from its pioneering beginnings to contemporary achievements in sport aviation, aircraft design and aviation services.

For visitors, this means the museum is much more than a collection of aircraft parked in hangars. It is a place where technology, design, military history and human ambition meet. Kraków’s official tourism site highlights the breadth of the collection, including very early aircraft and rare Polish constructions, while regional tourism material notes the museum’s strong representation of aircraft used by the Polish Air Force and civil aviation. Together, these features make it appealing both to aviation enthusiasts and to general visitors interested in twentieth-century history, engineering and Polish heritage.

The practical side of a visit is also straightforward. The museum’s official contact page currently shows March opening hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with Monday closed. The museum also notes that the last entry and end of ticket sales are 45 minutes before closing, and that the entrance is from the side of al. Jana Pawła II, reached on foot via ul. Markowskiego. Because opening schedules can vary by month, it is best to check the official website before visiting.

The Museum of Polish Aviation is therefore one of Kraków’s most rewarding museums for anyone interested in aircraft, innovation and modern history. Its historic airfield setting, wide-ranging permanent exhibitions and new large-scale civil aviation display give it a special depth. Rather than presenting aviation only as machinery, the museum shows it as part of a much bigger story about people, technology and Poland’s place in the history of flight.
